The Met – Weekly Residency

Weekly every Friday & Saturday night at The Met Brisbane in Fortitude Valley

Music is and always will be a major part of my life. Having a music teacher mum and making trips to church every Sunday ensured that I was smothered with music growing up. My earliest memories go back to the soulful sounds of legends such as Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder.

Disco was the bomb for me as a kid growing up in the late 70′s and early 80′s. With a passion for roller-skating, I was constantly drenched in the disco groove. Earth, Wind and Fire, Donna Summer, The Jackson Five, The Bee Gees and Patrick Hernandez led the charge for me, amidst a love for the rock and roll of the ageless Kiss.

When the 80′s hit in full swing, I drifted towards bands like The Cure, The Clash and The Smiths. Then in stark contrast, I began following the fresh, new hip-hop sound, enjoying the rhyme of artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, the Rocksteady Crew, Jungle Brothers and De La Soul.

DJ’s were not initially an inspiration for me. It was the Manchester sound of the early 90′s through the Happy Mondays, Stone Roses and Soup Dragons that got me moving toward a more dance oriented genre. Acid Jazz then became a passion through Corduroy, the Brand New Heavies and Aussie group D.I.G. on labels such as Acid Jazz and Talkin’ Loud, providing soulful, jazzy and get down and boogie groove tunes.

During this time I, completed my Law degree at Queensland University of Technology and commenced a career as a budding young lawyer!

My first real introduction to the dance scene was at the Gold Coast’s Big Day Out in 1994. Soon after I found myself at dance parties, raves and the like, listening and grooving to the higher energy of house music. Big DJ names like Sasha and Judge Jules were the superstars of the moment, but it wasn’t till I saw and heard guys like Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, Norman Jay and Masters at Work playing and producing wicked vocal house, that I knew what I wanted to experience.
